What is Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA)?

Applied behaviour analysis is the process of systematically applying interventions based on the principles of learning theory to improve socially significant behaviours to a meaningful degree, and to demonstrate that the interventions employed are responsible for the improvement in behaviour (Baer, Wolf & Risley, 1968; Sulzer-Azaroff & Mayer, 1991).

Over the past 40 years, several thousand research studies have documented the effectiveness of ABA across a wide range of:

populations (children and adults with mental illness, developmental disabilities and learning disorders)
interventionists (parents, teachers and staff)
settings (schools, homes, institutions, group homes, hospitals and business offices)
behaviours (language; social, academic, leisure and functional life skills; aggression, self-injury, oppositional and stereotyped behaviors)

There are many different teaching strategies that are used under the umbrella of Applied Behaviour Analysis. These include shaping and chaining behaviours. In addition, it includes specific teaching strategies such as discrete trial instruction, incidental teaching, fluency based instruction and many more. Each of these instructional techniques has a rich empirical support base.

Assessment and Individual Programming

At Shining Through Centre it is our goal to provide highly individualized instruction that is functional and meaningful. The starting point of accomplishing this task is our assessment process. We utilize a variety of assessment tools including the VB-MAPP and PEAK in order to determine learning strengths and needs of the Children.  Once completed and in collaboration with the family and other relevant team members, an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) with specific goals is developed. The process is reviewed and updated every 6 months.

Direct Funding Option (DFO)

Shining Through Centre is able to provide families with the DFO option as we have an approved clinician in charge. Families that are eligible for this funding from the Provincial regional providers (including TPAS, Kinark, and ErinOak Kids) are able to utilize these funds here at Shining Through.
